Dr Laura Bird

Psychologist

(Clinical Psychology Registrar)

MPsych (Clin)/PhD

Laura is a clinical psychology registrar with interest and experience in treating psychological difficulties (including mood and anxiety disorders) within the broader context of medical, neurological, and health-related conditions. She has helped clients with functional neurological disorder (FND), epilepsy, stroke, and brain injury, through private practice and public hospital roles.

Her clinical work draws upon predominantly cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) techniques, with a person-centred and flexible approach determined by each client's unique goals for therapy. She has

worked with clients to learn mindfulness and relaxation techniques, improve assertive communication, problem-solve through difficult situations, improve insight into thoughts, feelings, and behaviour, and learn to effectively identify and express emotions.

Outside of her current clinical work, Laura is a Research Fellow in the Turner Institute for Brain and Mental Health at Monash University. Her research explores cognitive and music-related impairments in people with epilepsy with and without music training, cognitive and brain changes over time following stroke, using digital technologies to assess cognitive abilities, and using music to enhance cognitive and psychological wellbeing.
